BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science is a biomedical science degree focused on the study of human health, disease mechanisms and diagnostic procedures. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, Project Management, Communication & Writing, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students complete an independent research project in the final year and have the option to undertake a professional placement year. The first year establishes foundations through Human Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Core Biology, and Mathematics for the Biosciences. The second year introduces Diagnostic Techniques in Pathology, Metabolism and its Control, Principles of Genetics, and Laboratory Techniques in DNA Manipulation. The final year covers advanced subjects including Human Pathology, Specialist Topics in Biomedical Science, Undergraduate Project, and Haematology, Immunology and Transfusion Science. Optional modules in the final year allow specialisation in areas such as Molecular Cell Biology, Microbial Pathogenicity, and Pharmacology and Translational Medicine.
