About this course

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences is a biomedical science degree centred on the human body at a molecular, cellular and systems level, exploring how to investigate and treat disease. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, and Project Management. The course is available with a placement year. The first year covers foundational subjects through Human Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Core Biology, and Mathematics for the Biosciences. The second year introduces diagnostic disciplines and experimental design through modules such as Diagnostic Techniques in Pathology, Principles of Pathology, and Preparation for Research, alongside optional training in Laboratory Techniques in DNA manipulation or Laboratory Techniques for Bioinformatics. The final year focuses on advanced clinical disciplines and includes compulsory modules such as Human Pathology, Blood Sciences, and Clinical Immunology, culminating in an independent Undergraduate Project. Optional modules in the final year allow students to explore areas like Molecular Cell Biology, Microbial Pathogenicity, Biomedical Case Studies, and Pharmacology and Translational Medicine.
