About this course
BA (Hons) in Modern Languages, a modern languages degree centred on the study of foreign languages, cultures, and societies. The course includes a compulsory study or work abroad placement in the third year. The first year covers foundational language acquisition and historical contexts through modules such as Advanced German 1: language and society, Europe in the modern world, French 1: language and society, and The German-speaking world in the 19th and 20th centuries. The second year builds proficiency in context with modules including Advanced German 2: Language in context, Beyond the Iron Curtain contemporary history of Germany and Austria, French 2: Language in context, and Intercultural awareness. The third year is spent abroad completing study or work placements. The final year focuses on advanced linguistic competence with modules such as Advanced French 3, Advanced German 3, Advanced Spanish 3, and Advanced Italian.
