About this course
BSc (Hons) in Social Sciences, a social sciences degree examining contemporary issues of social change and justice through an interdisciplinary curriculum. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, and Research Methods. The course covers sociology, international development, social policy, and criminology, culminating in a mandatory dissertation. The first year introduces how society works and how to evaluate data through compulsory modules such as Becoming a social scientist 1, Becoming a social scientist 2, Social problems, social change and the state, The making of modern society, and Understanding social change. Year 2 focuses on methodological approaches with compulsory study in Qualitative analysis: the power of immersion and Quantitative data analysis: the power of statistics. Students can maintain a broad approach or choose to specialise in policy, social theory, or justice and conflict. The final year centres on the Social sciences dissertation alongside optional units addressing contemporary sociological issues.
