About this course

MPhys (Hons) in Physics with Astrophysics, a physics and physics with astrophysics degree centred on astronomical and physical phenomena. Core topics include Data Analysis and Research Methods. The course culminates in a final year research project allowing students to engage with departmental research. The first year covers foundational concepts through Dynamics and astrophysics, Foundations of physics 1, Mathematics for physics 1, and Physics skills 1. The second year progresses with Foundations of physics 2, Further physics: from neutrinos to black holes, Mathematics for physics 2, Physics skills 2, and Scientific computing and advanced data analysis. The third year builds advanced knowledge via Advanced quantum mechanics, Fluid dynamics in physics and astrophysics, Galaxies and introduction to cosmology, General relativity, MPhys / MSci project preparation, and Stars and stellar evolution. The final year focuses on advanced theoretical topics and independent study, featuring Advanced general relativity, Cosmology, Galaxy evolution, High energy astrophysics, and the MPhys/MSci research project.
