About this course
MPhys (Hons) in Physics with Astrophysics, a physics and physics with astrophysics degree centered on astrophysical phenomena and fundamental theoretical physics. Core topics include Data Analysis and Research Methods. The curriculum includes an integrated study abroad or professional placement period, and concludes with a substantial final-year research project. The first year covers initial mathematical and physical concepts through Dynamics and astrophysics, Foundations of physics 1, Mathematics for physics 1, and Physics skills 1. The second year expands technical competencies with modules such as Foundations of physics 2, Further physics: from neutrinos to black holes, Mathematics for physics 2, and Scientific computing and advanced data analysis. The third year incorporates a compulsory study abroad or professional placement. The fourth year advances theoretical knowledge through Advanced quantum mechanics, Fluid dynamics in physics and astrophysics, Galaxies and introduction to cosmology, General relativity, and Stars and stellar evolution, alongside MPhys / MSci project preparation. The final year focuses on advanced astrophysical topics via modules including Advanced general relativity, Cosmology, Galaxy evolution, and High energy astrophysics, culminating in the MPhys/MSci research project.
