About this course

MPhys (Hons) in Physics with Theoretical Physics, a physics degree focused on foundational theoretical concepts and mathematical frameworks. Core topics include Research Methods. Students complete a substantial final-year research project and share a common first-year curriculum with related programmes. The first year covers core grounding through Dynamics and astrophysics, Foundations of physics 1, Mathematics for physics 1, and Physics skills 1. The second year progresses with Foundations of physics 2, Further physics: from neutrinos to black holes, Mathematics for physics 2, Physics skills 2, and Techniques for theoretical physics. Year 3 builds advanced competence via Advanced classical mechanics, Advanced quantum mechanics, Fluid dynamics in physics and astrophysics, MPhys / MSci project preparation, and Symmetry and topology. The final year concludes with Advanced general relativity, MPhys/MSci research project, Phase transitions and critical phenomena, Quantum field theory, and Quantum theory of matter.
