About this course
MPhys (Hons) in Physics with Theoretical Physics, a physics degree focused on foundational physical theory and mathematical methods. Core topics include Research Methods. The five-year degree incorporates a third year spent on a study abroad period or a professional placement, culminating in an independent research project. The first year covers core concepts through compulsory modules such as Foundations of physics 1, Dynamics and astrophysics, Mathematics for physics 1, and Physics skills 1. The second year builds on this foundation with modules including Foundations of physics 2, Further physics: from neutrinos to black holes, Mathematics for physics 2, and Techniques for theoretical physics. The third year is dedicated to a Study abroad or Professional placement. The fourth year introduces advanced material through modules such as Advanced classical mechanics, Advanced quantum mechanics, Fluid dynamics in physics and astrophysics, and Symmetry and topology. The final year concludes with a major research project alongside advanced studies in modules including Advanced general relativity, Phase transitions and critical phenomena, Quantum field theory, and Quantum theory of matter.
