About this course

Bachelor of Arts in German and Spanish BA, a German and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies degree centred on linguistic proficiency and cultural study. Core topics include Global & Comparative Perspective. The course includes a compulsory third-year period abroad spent studying or working in a German- or Spanish-speaking country. The first year covers language acquisition alongside foundational modules such as German Language 1 (Advanced), Spanish Language 1 (Advanced), Nation, Democracy, Diversity in the German-speaking world and Introduction to Hispanic Cultures. The second year builds on language skills and cultural contexts through modules like German Language 2 (Advanced), Spanish Language 2 (Advanced), Cultures of Protest and Terror in West Germany, 1967-1977 and Histories of the Excluded: Inquisition and the Birth of Human Rights. The final year allows students to focus on advanced language study and specialized topics such as German Language Final Year, Spanish Language Final Year, Seeing Differently: German-Language Cinema since 1960 and Social and Political Processes in Contemporary Latin America, alongside an independent study project.
