About this course
Master in Science in Microbiology MSci, a biology and microbiology degree focused on microscopic life, cell biology, and genetic engineering. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods, Fieldwork, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. The programme includes a substantial Extended Research Project in the final year. The first year introduces foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as Cell Biology & Physiology, Genetics I, and Molecular Biosciences and Microbiology. The second year builds on this with compulsory studies in Communication and Enterprise, Genetic Engineering and Data Science, and Microbiology: Medicine, Environment, and Industry, alongside optional modules including Alpine and Glacial Ecology in Norway and Field Course: Adaptations to Aquatic Environments. In the third year, students undertake compulsory training in Evidence-based literature review and critical analysis informed project proposal and Microbial Pathogenicity and Disease, while choosing from options like Arctic Microbiology and Bacterial Gene Regulation. The fourth year centres on advanced study and research, featuring the Extended Research Project alongside specialised options such as Molecular and Cellular Immunology and Omics for Biomedical Research.
