About this course

BA (Hons) in Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, an english and celtic and history degree centered on the history, material culture, languages and literature of early medieval Britain, Ireland and Scandinavia. The first year establishes foundations through Anglo-Saxon history, Scandinavian history, Gaelic history (Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man), Brittonic history (Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, the Pictish kingdoms and the North Britons), Old English, Old Norse, medieval Welsh, medieval Irish, medieval Latin and palaeography (the study of manuscripts and handwriting). The second year expands into broader disciplines with Divinity, English, Modern and Medieval Languages, Archaeology and History. The final year allows deeper specialisation through options such as Rethinking the Viking Age, 'Beowulf', Advanced Medieval Irish Language and Literature, Germanic Philology, medieval English literature, medieval French literature, historical linguistics, a subject from the Faculty of Classics and a subject from the Faculty of Divinity.
