About this course
BA (Hons) in Anthropology and Sociology, a degree combining sociological and anthropological study. Core topics include research methods. The programme draws on modules from both the anthropology and sociology degrees, built around a shared core of theory and methods. Optional modules can be drawn from both disciplines, and an optional placement with a local community organisation is available. The first year covers both disciplines through the compulsory modules People and Cultures, examining diverse societies and cultures through an anthropological lens, and Classical Sociological Theory, which traces the development of sociological thought from its classical foundations. First-year options have included Doing Anthropological Research, Human Evolution and Diversity, and Health, Illness and Society. The second year offers a wider range of modules drawn from both fields, including Power and Inequality, Global Health and Inequality, Research Skills and Project Design, and Community Placement. The third year centres on a compulsory Dissertation, in which students plan and carry out independent research in anthropology or sociology, while optional modules such as Decolonising Anthropology, Forensic Anthropology, Drugs and Society, and Race, Racism and Social Justice in Britain allow further specialisation.
