About this course

MChem (Hons) in Chemistry (with Overseas Placement), a chemistry degree taught over four years full-time. Core topics include Mathematical Modelling, Statistics, Research Methods and Laboratory Techniques. A compulsory language module is taken in the first year in preparation for an overseas placement, with proficiency in the chosen language required before the placement begins. Students choose two or three Contemporary Chemistry modules in the third year. The first year establishes foundations through Foundations of Chemistry: Atoms, Bonding & Energetics, Experimental Chemistry II: Developing Laboratory Expertise, Mathematical Methods for Chemists and Chemical Systems & Change: Structure & Dynamics, alongside the compulsory language module. Year two covers the three principle strands through Principles of Inorganic Chemistry: Symmetry & Transition metal complexes, Principles of Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics & Spectroscopy and Principles of Organic Chemistry: Aromaticity & Synthetic Strategy, supported by Practical Chemistry Level 2 – Integrated, a laboratory module examining synthesis, measurement and interpretation. Optional modules at this stage have included Molecular Structure and Spectroscopic Methods and Chemical Principles of Biological Systems. The third year consolidates practical work through Practical Chemistry Level 3 – Integrated, with Contemporary Inorganic Chemistry: Organometallics & Catalysis, Contemporary Organic Chemistry: Pericyclic & stereoselectivity and Contemporary Physical Chemistry: Statistical thermodynamics & Kinetics, from which students select two or three modules. Optional modules here span Advanced Materials Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Chemistry into Schools and Enhancing Pedagogy in Chemistry. The fourth year is built around the External Research Project, undertaken at an overseas university, with optional modules including Advanced Research Concepts in Chemistry, Frontiers in Molecular Assembly and Emerging Developments in Chemistry.
