A level: AAB You are not expected to have any previous knowledge of Chinese, but if you do have an A level (or equivalent) in Chinese, then you may be able to enter the Advanced stream from Year 1. IB: 35 with 665 in higher level subjects. Please see above for subject requirements.
About this course
BA (Hons) Chinese Studies with Year Abroad is a Chinese degree combining language study with the history, culture and film of China and East Asia. Core topics include research methods and communication and writing. Placement in the first-year language module, Chinese Language 1A or Chinese Language 1B, depends on prior attainment, with separate entry routes for beginners and for holders of an A level or equivalent in Chinese. The third year is spent at a Chinese university studying the language full-time, and the fourth year ends with a dissertation on an aspect of Chinese studies. The first year lays foundations through Chinese Language 1A or Chinese Language 1B, Introduction to Chinese Culture and Modern East Asian History, which covers China and Japan from the First Opium War to the end of the Cold War. Year 2 continues the language through Chinese Language 2A or Chinese Language 2B, developing speaking, listening, reading and writing, and examines twentieth-century China through Chinese Cinema. Students select 60 credits of optional modules in the second year, including Classical Chinese, Chinese Literature: Images, Fictions, Worldmaking, Modern China's Transformations, Designing for Digital Culture, Music and Place and World Philosophies. The third year is spent in China studying the language full-time at a Chinese university. The final year compulsory modules are Chinese Language 4, Chinese Historical and Literary Texts, which builds advanced reading and translation of literary and historical texts, and the dissertation. Optional modules at this stage include Polygraphing Japonisme, Classical Chinese, and Korean or Japanese language modules.
