About this course

MSci (Hons) in Computer Science and Mathematics, a natural sciences degree combining computer science with mathematical study. Core topics include Programming, Computer Architecture, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The first two years follow the same structure as the BSc, with an equal balance of computer science and mathematics, and students may transfer to the MSci Computer Science or MMath Mathematics degrees at the end of Year 1. The first year covers computing foundations through Algorithms and Data Structures alongside the mathematics of Calculus I, Linear Algebra I, Probability I and Statistics I; Computational Thinking is compulsory for students without A Level Computer Science, and optional modules have included Computer Systems and Data Science. In the second year students choose among optional modules spanning Theory of Computation, Programming Paradigms, Artificial Intelligence, Algebra II, Probability, Statistical Inference II and Data Science. Year 3 centres on Project Preparation, where students develop research, writing and presentation skills for the final-year project, with optional modules such as Advanced Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Neural Networks III, Scientific Computing, Cryptography and Decision Theory III. The fourth year is built around the compulsory Advanced Computer Science Project OR Mathematics Project (40 or 60 credits), a detailed critical examination of a topic in computer science, mathematics or statistics. Optional modules in the final year include Data Compression and Coding Theory, Representation Theory IV, Nonparametric Statistics IV and Uncertainty Quantification and Clinical Trials IV.
