About this course
MSci (Hons) Computer Science and Mathematics, a natural sciences degree combining computing with mathematics. Core topics include Programming, Computer Architecture, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The first two years follow the same structure as the BSc, balancing computer science and mathematics. At the end of Year 1, students may transfer onto the MSci Computer Science or MMath Mathematics degrees. The first year introduces algorithms and data structures alongside calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, with Computational Thinking compulsory for those without A Level Computer Science at grade B or equivalent and optional otherwise; example optional modules include Computer Systems and Data Science. Year 2 continues the joint study, with optional modules that have included Theory of Computation, Programming Paradigms, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science. The third year centres on Project Preparation, developing research, writing and presentation skills in advance of the final-year project, while optional modules span areas such as Digital Humanities, Computer Vision and Graphics, Advanced Artificial Intelligence, and Cryptography. The final year is built around a compulsory Advanced Computer Science Project or Mathematics Project, with optional modules including Data Compression and Coding Theory, Representation Theory IV, Nonparametric Statistics IV, Uncertainty Quantification and Clinical Trials IV, and Spatio-temporal Statistics IV.
