About this course

BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, a computer science degree centred on the design, analysis and implementation of computing systems. Core topics include Computer Architecture, Systems Design, Programming, Data Analysis, Mathematical Modelling and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The Year 2 Software Engineering module includes a team project carried out with an external organisation. An optional additional year abroad at an overseas partner institution or an industry placement year extends the programme to four years. The first year establishes the foundations through Programming, Algorithms and Data Structures, Computer Systems and Mathematics for Computer Science, alongside Computational Thinking and Data Science. Year 2 extends into systems, theory and AI practice with compulsory modules in Networks and Systems, Theory of Computation, Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering, plus Programming Paradigms and Graphics and Image Processing. The final year concentrates on advanced theoretical foundations through Core Computer Science and the Individual Project, which accounts for one third of the final year. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas including Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Cryptography and Advanced Computer Systems; other recent choices have included Reinforcement Learning, Recommender Systems and Parallel Scientific Computing.
