About this course

BSc (Hons) in Economics (with study abroad) is an economics degree applying quantitative and analytical methods to questions of resource allocation across society. Core topics include programming, data analysis, statistics, mathematical modelling, research methods, and critical and analytical thinking. The third year is spent studying abroad at a partner university, and students may instead complete the course in three years or add a placement year. The first year establishes the foundations through Principles of Economics, Economic Methods, Global Economic History and Mastering Data and Computation, the last of which teaches data analysis and programming using datasets drawn from real economic questions. The second year develops formal macroeconomic and microeconomic theory through Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Econometrics, the last ending with a written report applying empirical methods; optional modules extend into Behavioural and Experimental Economics, Political Economy and Macroeconomic Applications and Policy. The third year is spent studying abroad at one of the university's partner institutions. The final year centres on a compulsory Dissertation, an independent investigation of a chosen economic topic, with optional modules including Advanced Macroeconomic Theory, Advanced Microeconomic Theory, Applied Econometrics, Developmental Economics, Environmental Economics and Policy, International Economics, Monetary Economics and Labour Economics.
