About this course
The BA (Hons) Education Studies - Geography is a degree spanning education and geography, examining how educational processes interact with current issues in geography. Core topics include research methods. The programme runs for three years full-time, with a compulsory dissertation completed in the final year. Students can apply to add a placement year or study abroad at an overseas partner institution, extending the degree to four years. The first year builds foundations across both fields through Encountering Educational Research, Education in Question and Introduction to the History and Philosophy of Education, alongside Introduction to Geographical Research and one module selected from Human Geography or Physical Geography. The second year deepens critical engagement with Researching Education and The Trouble with Education, while optional modules span areas such as Assessing Education, Geographies of Development, Urban Geography and Climate Change: Geographical Perspectives. The final year centres on the compulsory Dissertation and Education Reimagined, the latter asking students to develop co-designed responses to external educational problems. Optional Geography modules at this level include River Dynamics, Mountain Hazards, Antarctic Environments and Politics and Space, while education options include Evidence and Educational Policy and Education, Mental Health and Wellbeing. Other optional lists have included Decolonising Knowledge and Power and a language module via the Centre for Foreign Language Study.
