About this course
MEng (Hons) in Engineering (Bioengineering) is an engineering degree with a bioengineering specialism. Core topics include circuit design, computer architecture, signal processing, control systems, and artificial intelligence and machine learning, and mathematical modelling. After a common first two years, students choose between Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering, with further final-year specialisation in Bioengineering or Renewable Energy, plus a supervised research and development project. The first year covers engineering foundations through Solid Mechanics and Structures, Electronic and Electrical Systems, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, and Mathematics for Engineers. The second year develops these further with Engineering Mathematics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, and Engineering Design, which includes a major design project. The third year advances into Solid Mechanics, Materials, Electrical Engineering, and Control and Signal Processing, alongside further Engineering Design work connecting technical content with project activity. The final year focuses on bioengineering through Tissue Engineering, Artificial Organs, Biomechanics and Physiological Fluid Mechanics, alongside Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning and the MEng Research and Development Project. An optional final-year module allows further specialisation, with recent examples including Environmental Engineering, Non-Linear Solid Mechanics, and Optimisation and Control for Artificial Intelligence.
