About this course
MEng (Hons) in Engineering (Civil), an engineering degree with civil engineering as its specialism. Core topics include engineering design, mathematical modelling, project management, circuit design, computer architecture, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. The first two years are shared with General Engineering before students specialise in Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering. The final year includes the MEng Research and Development Project. The first year covers engineering foundations through Mathematics for Engineers, Solid Mechanics and Structures, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics and Engineering Practice. Year 2 extends the common core with Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Engineering Design, which includes a major design project. After the shared first two years, the degree branches into Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering; the civil route starts in year 3 with Civil Design, Geotechnics, Structures, Civil Materials and Geomatics and Environmental Engineering. Year 4 adds advanced civil content through Advanced Geotechnical Engineering, Planning and Net Zero, Structural Design and Hydrology and Water Resources, alongside the MEng Research and Development Project carried out with an academic supervisor. A final-year optional module allows further specialisation, with recent examples including Non-linear Solid Mechanics, Optimisation and Control for Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning and Transportation Infrastructure Engineering.
