About this course

The BEng (Hons) in Engineering (Civil) is an engineering degree in which a broad engineering programme leads to a civil engineering specialisation. Core topics include circuit design, computer architecture, statistics, mathematical modelling, project management and engineering design. The first two years follow the same general engineering content as the four-year MEng, with transfer between the two courses possible up to the end of the second year, after which students specialise in civil engineering. Year 1 provides the shared engineering base through Mathematics for Engineers, Solid Mechanics and Structures, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, and Electronic and Electrical Systems. Year 2 advances to Engineering Mathematics, further Solid Mechanics and Structures, which extends into dynamics, vibration, soil mechanics and finite element methods, plus Electronics and Engineering Design, where the design process and project management are introduced through a major supervised project. The third year specialises in civil engineering: Civil Design covers structural steelwork and reinforced concrete design, Geotechnics introduces soil geology, and Structures, Civil Materials and Geomatics addresses structural analysis, civil materials, land surveying and GIS. Environmental Engineering examines sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the BEng Engineering Project is an individual, supervisor-led investigation of a chosen technical topic.
