About this course

MEng (Hons) Engineering (Electrical), an engineering degree covering a broad general foundation before specialist electrical engineering content. Core topics include circuit design, computer architecture, signal processing, microelectronics, control systems and artificial intelligence and machine learning. After a shared first two years, students choose a Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering pathway. The final year includes a research and development project undertaken with an academic supervisor. The first year sits within the shared general engineering foundation, with compulsory modules Solid Mechanics and Structure, Electronic and Electrical Systems, Mathematics for Engineers and Engineering Practice. Year two adds Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Engineering Design, the last involving a major design project developed with academic and external guidance. Year three turns towards electrical specialism through Semiconductor Physics and Devices, Electronics and Communications, Control and Signal Processing, which covers control system design and signal analysis, and further Electrical Engineering. Year four is built around the MEng Research and Development Project, alongside Renewable Energy Technologies, Electrical Energy Conversion, Power Electronics and Smart Energy Networks. Final-year optional modules, previously including Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, Environmental Engineering and Optimisation and Control for Artificial Intelligence, allow further specialisation in Renewable Energy and Bioengineering.
