About this course

BEng (Hons) in Engineering (Electrical), an engineering degree centred on electrical and electronic systems. Core topics include Circuit Design, Computer Architecture, Signal Processing, Microelectronics, Control Systems, Project Management and Engineering Design. Transfer to the four-year Durham MEng is possible until the end of the second year. The final year centres on an individual engineering project supervised by an academic member of staff. The first year lays broad engineering foundations through Solid Mechanics and Structures, Electronic and Electrical Systems, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics and Mathematics for Engineers, with Engineering Practice showing how these fit together in applied contexts. The second year deepens this base with further study of Solid Mechanics and Structures and Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, alongside Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Engineering Mathematics and Engineering Design, where students undertake a major design project with academic and external guidance. The third year specialises into Electrical Engineering through compulsory modules in Electrical Engineering, Semiconductor Physics and Devices, Control and Signal Processing, and Electronics and Communications, covering power electronics, device physics, control theory and communications principles. The BEng Engineering Project gives students an open-ended research topic to investigate with a supervisor, from generating and analysing data through to reporting results.
