About this course

MEng (Hons) in Engineering (Mechanical) is an engineering degree built on broad engineering foundations before a mechanical specialism. Core topics include Circuit Design, Computer Architecture, Signal Processing, Control Systems, Mathematical Modelling and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The first two years are shared in General Engineering, after which students specialise in Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering; the final year includes a supervised research and development project. The first year establishes broad engineering foundations through Mathematics for Engineers, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics and Structures and Engineering Practice. Year two deepens the core with Engineering Mathematics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Engineering Design, which covers the design process and project management. The third year builds on earlier mechanics with Solid Mechanics and Materials, introduces electromechanical energy conversion and power electronics through Electrical Engineering, and develops control system design and signal analysis techniques in Control and Signal Processing. Year four centres on the MEng Research and Development Project, an open-ended research task run with an academic supervisor, supported by advanced study in Turbomachinery and Propulsion, Renewable Energy Technologies and Future Vehicles. A final-year optional module allows study beyond the core specialism; recent examples include Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, Environmental Engineering and Optimisation and Control for Artificial Intelligence.
