About this course
BEng (Hons) in Engineering (Mechanical), a broad-based engineering degree centred on the principles of mechanical engineering. Core topics include circuit design, statistics, mathematical modelling, project management and engineering design. The first two years follow the same broad engineering base as the four-year Durham MEng, with transfer between the two courses possible up to the end of the second year. Students can also spend an additional year studying at an overseas institution or in industry between the second and third years. The first year establishes the foundations through Solid Mechanics and Structures, Electronic and Electrical Systems, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Mathematics for Engineers, Engineering Practice and Computational Tools for Engineers and Scientists. In the second year, Engineering Mathematics develops probability, statistics and advanced methods for analysing engineering problems, while Electrical Engineering and Electronics cover electrical machines, analogue circuits, sensors and microprocessor design; the compulsory Engineering Design module ends with a major design project. The third year specialises into Mechanical Engineering, with Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics (dynamics, materials, computational stress analysis and fatigue), Materials (processing–structure–properties relationships and manufacturing techniques) and Electrical Engineering (electromechanical energy conversion and power electronics). Each student also completes the BEng Engineering Project, an individual investigation of a research topic carried out with a project supervisor.
