About this course
BSc (Hons) in Environmental Geoscience, a degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences centred on Earth's resources, environmental risks such as pollution, and how they are managed. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, Research Methods, Fieldwork and Environmental Analysis. In later years students choose optional modules to specialise in areas of interest, and the final year includes a compulsory Dissertation. A placement year or year abroad can extend the course to four years, and transfer to the four-year MSci is possible at the end of the second year. The first year builds foundations through Field Studies, Understanding Earth Sciences and Earth Materials, alongside compulsory mathematics and Introductory Data Science for Geoscientists, which introduces computational handling of geoscientific and geospatial data. Field Studies covers mapping, observation and the recording and processing techniques needed in the field. The second year turns to sedimentary processes with Sedimentary Environments and to environmental and climate records via Isotopes in Environmental and Climate Sciences, alongside Environmental Geophysics, Research Skills for Geoscientists and Fieldwork (Environmental). Optional modules that year have included Igneous and Metamorphic Processes and Earth Systems Modelling and Analysis. The final year is built around Environmental Geochemistry, which applies chemical techniques to samples such as water for monitoring pollution, and a compulsory Dissertation worth one-third of final-year marks, based on a computing, field or laboratory project. Optional modules have included Environmental Management, Geohazards, and Earth Systems and Climate.
