About this course

MEng (Hons) in General Engineering, a broad engineering degree drawing on several engineering disciplines. Core topics include circuit design, computer architecture, artificial intelligence and machine learning, mathematical modelling, engineering design and project management. The first two years are shared, before students select one of seven specialisms: Aeronautical, Bioengineering, Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or Renewable Energy Engineering. The final year adds an MEng Research and Development Project supervised by an academic. The first year builds foundations through Mathematics for Engineers, Solid Mechanics and Structures, Electronic and Electrical Systems and Engineering Practice, alongside training in computational tools. The second year develops these areas through Engineering Mathematics, covering probability, statistics and advanced modelling methods, Solid Mechanics and Structures, covering vibration, stress analysis and finite element methods, Electronics, covering analogue circuits, sensors and microprocessor design, and Engineering Design, in which a major design project is undertaken. From the third year students follow one of seven specialisms: Aeronautical, Bioengineering, Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or Renewable Energy Engineering. The fourth year continues that specialism with five further compulsory modules alongside the MEng Research and Development Project, an open-ended research task carried out with an academic supervisor. Optional modules in the final year have included Optimisation and Control for Artificial Intelligence 4, Environmental Engineering 4 and Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning 4.
