About this course

BA (Hons) in Japanese Studies with Year Abroad, a Chinese studies degree centred on Japanese language, history and culture. Core topics include Research Methods, Communication & Writing and Microelectronics. Students take a core Japanese language module in each of the first two years, with separate entry points depending on whether they already hold Japanese at A level. The third year is spent at a university in Japan, and the degree can be extended to five years with an optional placement year. Year 1 covers foundations through Japanese Language 1A or 1B, Modern East Asian History and Introduction to Japanese Culture. Year 2 deepens language study with Japanese Language 2A or 2B, alongside Science and Technology in Modern Japan: A Cultural History and Introduction to Anime: Aesthetic, Technology, Seriality. The third year is spent on the compulsory Study abroad module at a Japanese university. In the fourth year, Japanese Language 4 and Critical Methods for the Study of Japanese Literature and History sit alongside the compulsory Dissertation, which requires choosing an appropriate methodology for a research project on Japanese studies. Optional modules are drawn from across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; recent choices have included Modern China's Transformations, Designing for Digital Culture, Music and Place and World Philosophies.
