About this course

MSci (Hons) Mathematics and Physics, a Natural Sciences degree concentrating on the theoretical and mathematical core shared by mathematics and physics. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling and Laboratory Techniques. The common first year allows students to transfer onto the MSci Mathematics and Physics, MPhys or BSc Physics, or BSc Natural Sciences at the end of Year 1. In Year 2 there is a parallel track of theoretical physics taught by the Physics Department alongside mathematical physics and applied mathematics options from the Mathematics Department. The first year builds foundations through Calculus I, Linear Algebra I, Analysis I and Foundations of Physics I, with Discovery Skills in Physics introducing laboratory measurement, data analysis and programming. Year 2 adds Complex Analysis II, Mathematical Methods II, and Foundations of Physics 2A and 2B, and students choose between Methods of Mathematical Physics 2 and Theoretical Physics 2. Year 3 focuses on quantum, nuclear and particle physics via Foundations of Physics 3A, together with advanced electromagnetism and quantum mechanics in Theoretical Physics 3; optional choices have included General Relativity, Quantum Computing, Fluid Mechanics and Planets and Cosmology. In Year 4 the compulsory Physics or Mathematics Project involves research within a departmental research group, while options have covered Advanced Quantum Theory, Superstrings, Particle Theory, Statistical Mechanics and Theoretical Astrophysics.
