About this course

The BSc (Hons) Mathematics is a three-year undergraduate degree in mathematics, spanning pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics. Core topics include programming, statistics, data analysis, mathematical modelling, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. A placement year or a year abroad can be added, extending the course from three to four years. In the third year, students complete both a Group Project and an Individual Project. The first year covers compulsory Calculus, Linear Algebra, Analysis and Programming, plus Probability, Statistics, Discrete Mathematics and Dynamics and Relativity. Calculus treats differentiation and integration for functions of one and several variables, Analysis rebuilds calculus rigorously from the real and complex number systems, and Programming introduces basic computer programming in Python. The second year's compulsory Complex Analysis and Mathematical Methods cover complex differentiation, contour integrals and vector calculus. Students choose two modules from Algebra, Computational Mathematics and Statistical Inference, and two from Data Science and Statistical Modelling, Methods of Mathematical Physics and Probability II. The third year is anchored by the compulsory Group Project and Individual Project, where students investigate a mathematical topic as a team and then write a critical report on it. Optional modules that year include Advanced Statistical Modelling, Fluid Mechanics, Machine Learning and Neural Networks, and Stochastic Processes.
