About this course

The MMath (Hons) in Mathematics is a four-year undergraduate degree at Master's level, spanning pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics. Core topics include programming in Python, statistics and data analysis, mathematical modelling, machine learning, and mathematical writing. The first two years mirror the structure of the BSc, after which the MMath broadens the range of modules from year three. An optional placement year or a year abroad extends the degree to five years, and a year abroad can also replace year three. The first year builds the foundations through compulsory modules in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Analysis and Programming, with further compulsory study in probability, statistics, discrete mathematics and dynamics. The second year adds Complex Analysis and Mathematical Methods, with four optional modules chosen from lists including Algebra, Computational Mathematics, Statistical Inference, Methods of Mathematical Physics, Data Science and Statistical Modelling, and Probability II. The third year centres on a compulsory Group Project, where student teams investigate a mathematical topic and present their findings; options include Machine Learning and Neural Networks, Fluid Mechanics, Mathematical Finance and Number Theory. Final-year options extend to advanced areas such as High Dimensional Statistics & Deep Learning, Quantum Field Theory, Algebraic Topology, Riemannian Geometry and Stochastic Analysis. The final-year Project is an individual investigation of a mathematical topic, completed as a written report and an oral examination.
