A level: AAA Including an A in History and an A in at least one language from French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish. Grade A is required in the modern foreign language you intend to study at advanced level (French, German, Russian, Spanish or Italian). IB: 36 with 666 in higher level subjects. About this course
BA (Hons) in Modern Languages and History with Year Abroad, a joint honours degree in Languages and Cultures combining the study of a modern European language with history. Core topics include Research Methods. Students choose one of French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish as their language and spend the third year abroad, as an English assistant, a university student or in employment. The fourth year combines continued language study with a dissertation researching a historical issue or an aspect of culture. The first year centres on Languages, covering French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish, while History optionals have included Early Modern Worlds, Medieval Worlds and Power and Culture in the Modern World, 1800-2000. In the second year the compulsory module is Languages (minimum 20 credits), with optional modules including The Catalan language and Russian literature alongside History choices including Black British History and Wealth & Poverty in Africa. Year three is the compulsory Study abroad placement, taken as an English assistant in a school, as a university student or in employment, with a Year Abroad assignment completed under staff guidance. In the fourth year Languages is taken again alongside the compulsory Dissertation, in which students research and write independently on a historical issue or an aspect of culture. Final-year optional modules have covered Contemporary French fiction, Russian Cinema, The cult of saints in late antiquity and Japan in the global history of public opinion.
