Entry requirements
A level: AAA including at least one language from Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian, or Spanish. Grade A at A level in French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish is required to study that subject at advanced level. Grade A at A level in a modern European language is required to begin the study of a new beginners’ language, including French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Arabic. About this course
BA (Hons) in Modern Languages and Cultures with Year Abroad, placing students in the Languages and Cultures subject area through the study of multiple languages and their associated cultures. Core topics include Research Methods. The third year is spent abroad, and beginner and advanced language streams fully merge in the final year. The first year offers compulsory Languages study, with choices including Arabic, French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian or Russian at beginner or advanced level. The second year continues Languages study with a minimum of 20 credits, while optional modules cover areas such as Middle Eastern cinemas, Francophone writing, Identity in German-speaking cultures, and Race and Gender in Latin American Cinema. The third year is spent abroad, with students working as English assistants, attending university, or taking employment, and completing a Year Abroad assignment. The final year includes an Extended Dissertation or Short Dissertation, alongside further Languages study. Optional modules in the final year span Arabic literature and film, 20th-century French cinema, German Interpreting, History and culture of Berlin, and Modern Italian literature.
