About this course

BA (Hons) Philosophy and Theology is a joint honours degree within the Philosophy and Theology and Religion subject area, placing two complementary disciplines alongside one another. Core topics include research methods. The degree covers Anglo-American philosophy, Continental philosophy and world philosophies, alongside theology approached through a range of methodological and disciplinary perspectives. In the final year, students complete a dissertation in either Philosophy or in Theology and Religion, researching a topic of their choice in depth. The first year introduces both fields through compulsory modules in theology and philosophy, including Introduction to Christian Theology, Introduction to the Bible: Texts, History, Culture and The Philosophical Traditions. Alongside these, students choose one optional module from Theology and Religion and two from Philosophy, with past options including New Testament Greek and Knowledge, Minds and Reality. The second year turns to Reading Philosophy: World Philosophies and Atheism, Belief and the Edge of Reason, and combines them with two single-term exploration modules drawn from Philosophy, Theology and Religion or other Arts and Humanities departments, plus two further full-year optional modules from each discipline. In the final year, a compulsory Dissertation in either Philosophy or Theology and Religion is accompanied by optional modules such as Thomas Aquinas: Background, Context, Legacy, Metaphysics, Twentieth-Century European Philosophy and Issues in Old Testament Studies.
