About this course

MA (Hons) in Ancient and Medieval History, a history and classics degree centred on the historical evolution of the Greek and Roman worlds, late antiquity, Byzantium, and the medieval period. Core topics include Historical Research. The course is taught jointly through the classics and history departments. The first year introduces the history and culture of the Greek and Roman worlds alongside a broad survey covering the Middle Ages from Britain to Japan, supported by compulsory training in historical skills and the methods and skills required for historical research. The second year continues with specialized studies in ancient and medieval history together with historiography. In the third year, students complete at least two specialist courses in ancient, late antique or Byzantine history, at least two specialist courses in medieval history, and two additional courses in medieval history, ancient history, or other areas of classics. The final year involves two further specialist option courses in ancient history and a year-long special subject in medieval history.
