About this course
MA (Hons) in Arabic with Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, a Hebrew and Jewish Studies degree centred on the language, history and culture of the Arab world and the Middle East. By the third year, students spend the academic period studying abroad in a country where Arabic is spoken. The programme accepts complete beginners in Arabic and accommodates heritage language learners. The first year covers foundational subjects including Islamic History, Modern Middle Eastern History, linguistics and language sciences, and politics, social policy, social anthropology and international relations. The second year focuses on practical language proficiency through reading, writing, speaking and listening modules, alongside studies in the religion of Islam and Islamic and Middle Eastern Cultures. The third year involves a period of study abroad in an Arabic-speaking region.
