About this course
BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences (Biochemistry), a biological sciences degree focusing on the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of living systems. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, and Laboratory Techniques. The course offers a flexible structure allowing progression into a chosen specialisation such as biochemistry. The first year introduces foundational skills through student-led investigative projects and introductory coding, alongside hypothesis development and experimental design. The second year explores core concepts via cellular metabolic processes, DNA replication and repair, and programming for data analysis, while allowing students to progress into biochemistry. The third year advances into complex topics including protein structure and function, the basis of drug development strategies, and cellular communication. The final year concludes with advanced studies in structural molecular biology, biochemical laboratory techniques, membrane biology, and gene expression.

- On the BSc programme, you will progress into your chosen biological subject specialisation, for example, biochemistry, which will lead to your honours programme of choice.
- On the MBiol programme, you will not select a specific specialisation, but you will be encouraged to align with one of the areas of biological science. You must achieve an average of 60% across Years 1 and 2 to progress to the MBiol programme.
