About this course
BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences (Ecology), a biological sciences degree focusing on the study of living organisms and environmental interactions. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, and Fieldwork. The course provides a foundational structure where students progress into the ecology specialisation during their studies. The first year covers introductory concepts through modules such as hypothesis development and experimental design, data evaluation and analysis, introductory coding, and student-led investigative projects. The second year introduces specific disciplinary topics through programming for data analysis, data science techniques for interpretation of biological data, DNA replication and repair, and cellular metabolic processes. The third year builds practical competence via species population changes, field study techniques, and animal diversity and the processes that have led to this diversity. The final year concludes with advanced studies including experimental design and analysis, how molecular approaches can be used to address ecological questions, the evolution and diversification of animal-plant interactions, and current issues in ecology and environmental science.

- On the BSc programme, you will progress into your chosen biological subject specialisation, for example, ecology, which will lead to your honours programme of choice.
- On the MBiol programme, you will not select a specific specialisation, but you will be encouraged to align with one of the areas of biological science. You must achieve an average of 60% across Years 1 and 2 to progress to the MBiol programme.
