About this course
BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences (Genetics), a biological sciences degree focusing on the study of biological variation and its inheritance. Core topics include Programming and Data Analysis. The course provides a flexible learning experience across twelve subject areas, allowing students to specialise in genetics as they progress through the programme. The first year covers foundational skills through introductory coding, data evaluation and analysis, and hypothesis development and experimental design. The second year examines core mechanisms with modules such as DNA replication and repair, natural selection and the origin of species, cellular metabolic processes, and programming for data analysis. The third year progresses to advanced topics including analysis of genomic data, behaviour of genetic variation in populations, and genetic stability and instability. The fourth year concludes with specialized study through modules such as gene expression and RNA processing, recent evolutionary history of the hominin group, and relevant lab research skills.

- On the BSc programme, you will progress into your chosen biological subject specialisation, for example, genetics, which will lead to your honours programme of choice.
- On the MBiol programme, you will not select a specific specialisation, but you will be encouraged to align with one of the areas of biological science. You must achieve an average of 60% across Years 1 and 2 to progress to the MBiol programme.
