About this course
BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology), a biological sciences degree centred on the study of biological systems at the molecular level. Core topics include Programming and Data Analysis. Students progress into their chosen biological subject specialisation such as molecular biology on the BSc programme, or align with an area of biological science on the MBiol programme. The first year covers the foundations through student-led investigative projects, hypothesis development and experimental design, data evaluation and analysis, and introductory coding. The second year focuses on DNA replication and repair, cellular metabolic processes, natural selection and the origin of species, and programming for data analysis, alongside options such as modern plant biology and microbial form and function. The third year builds expertise through gene expression and RNA processing, analysis of genomic data, protein structure and function, and the basis of drug development strategies. The final year extends these concepts through how biological machines work at a molecular level, the life cycle of a protein, gene expression, and practical skills relevant to molecular biology research.

- On the BSc programme, you will progress into your chosen biological subject specialisation, for example, molecular biology, which will lead to your honours programme of choice.
- On the MBiol programme, you will not select a specific specialisation, but you will be encouraged to align with one of the areas of biological science. You must achieve an average of 60% across Years 1 and 2 to progress to the MBiol programme.
