About this course
BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences (Molecular Genetics), a biological sciences degree focusing on the molecular mechanisms of gene expression and regulation. Core topics include Programming and Data Analysis. Students can complete this programme over three years or take a four-year version. The first year introduces foundational skills through introductory coding, hypothesis development and experimental design, and student-led investigative projects. The second year moves into specialised areas with modules such as DNA replication and repair, natural selection and the origin of species, cellular metabolic processes, and programming for data analysis. The third year covers advanced topics including analysis of genomic data, gene expression and RNA processing, genetic engineering, and cell cycle control. A fourth year features specialised study in areas such as understanding how defects in biological processes, such as DNA repair, can contribute to disease, the mechanisms for regulating gene expression, and genetic aspects of host-parasite interactions.

- On the BSc programme, you will progress into your chosen biological subject specialisation, for example, molecular genetics, which will lead to your honours programme of choice.
- On the MBiol programme, you will not select a specific specialisation, but you will be encouraged to align with one of the areas of biological science. You must achieve an average of 60% across Years 1 and 2 to progress to the MBiol programme.
