About this course

BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences (Plant Science), a biological sciences degree focusing on botanical study and agricultural applications. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis. Students can progress into the plant science specialisation after completing foundational study across biological disciplines, with opportunities to complete final-year research projects through partner institutions. The first year introduces hypothesis development and experimental design, introductory coding, and data evaluation and analysis. The second year covers plant hybridisation and evolution, plant hormones and cell signalling, and programming for data analysis. The third year explores how plants acclimate and adapt to diverse environmental stresses, the construction and functions of different plant tissues and organs, and how this knowledge is being used in crop improvement and biotechnology. The fourth year includes study of the diversity of land plants, plant biotechnology, molecular mechanisms of the clock gene in plants, and plant identification in the field.

Modules

  • learn about ethics
  • hone your writing skills
  • reflect on your learning
  • have the opportunity to use your creativity when coming up with solutions to novel biological problems
  • hypothesis development and experimental design
  • data evaluation and analysis
  • introductory coding
  • communicating your ideas both orally and in writing
  • student-led investigative projects
  • self-reflection
  • DNA replication and repair
  • natural selection and the origin of species

  • On the BSc programme, you will progress into your chosen biological subject specialisation, for example, plant science, which will lead to your honours programme of choice.
  • On the MBiol programme, you will not select a specific specialisation, but you will be encouraged to align with one of the areas of biological science. You must achieve an average of 60% across Years 1 and 2 to progress to the MBiol programme.
