About this course

MA (Hons) in French and Spanish, a French and Francophone Studies and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies degree centred on the study of two major world languages in diverse cultural contexts. Students complete a full academic year abroad, which can be spent studying or working in one or two destinations. This includes options to spend two semesters at a single institution, one semester at two different institutions in different destinations, arrange work or volunteering with a private company or charity, or apply to an established placement scheme such as the British Council’s English Language Assistants programme. The first year covers foundational topics through modules such as resistance and collaboration, the Fifth Republic, colonisation and decolonisation, and May 1968. The second year examines cultural themes through modules including Cultural Responses to War, Migration, Exile, Diaspora, Crime and Detection in Literature, and Gender and Culture. The third year consists of the year abroad spent studying or working. The final year allows students to focus on advanced areas such as film, literature, history, politics, language, linguistics, and media and cultural production.
