About this course
MA (Hons) in German and Linguistics is an undergraduate degree spanning English Language and Linguistics and German. The programme includes a full academic year abroad spent studying or working in destinations such as Berlin, Vienna or Leipzig, as well as an independent dissertation or long essay in the final year. The first year covers introductory foundations through Linguistics and English Language 1A and Linguistics and English Language 1B. In the second year, students build knowledge through courses such as Researching Disability in German Literature and Society, Culture, Modernity and the City in the Weimar Republic, Reading Testimony in German, and The Contemporary Short Story in German. The third year consists of an academic year abroad involving study, work or volunteering in German-speaking locations. The final year centres on advanced language competence, covering spoken German, essay and précis writing, and German-to-English translation of literary and journalistic texts alongside literature, film, theatre and society.
