About this course

MA (Hons) in German and Social Policy, a social policy and German degree centred on modern language proficiency alongside the study of welfare, wellbeing and policy distribution. Core topics include Global & Comparative Perspective. The programme spans four years and incorporates a compulsory third year spent abroad studying or working in locations such as Berlin, Vienna or Leipzig. The first year introduces foundational subjects across disciplines including politics, social policy, business, economics and informatics. The second year progresses to specialized studies through modules such as Researching Disability in German Literature and Society, Comparative Social Policy: Global Perspectives, and Research Skills for Social Policy. During the third year, students undertake an international placement by studying at an institution or working as a language assistant. The final year concentrates on advanced linguistic competence through modules such as spoken German, essay and précis writing, and German-to-English translation of literary and journalistic texts.
