About this course

MA (Hons) in Japanese and Linguistics, a joint degree in English Language and Linguistics and Chinese covering language acquisition and cultural contexts. Students spend year 3 studying abroad in Japan. The first year introduces foundational elements through beginner, post-beginner, and pre-intermediate (advanced) language courses, alongside modules such as the way language is structured and the regional and social variations of language in general, and of the English language in particular. Year 2 advances this knowledge with modules including Political Cultures and Cultural Politics in Contemporary Japan, Introduction to Japanese Literature, Linguistic Theory and the Structure of English, and Cross-linguistic Variation: Limits and Theories. Year 3 consists of a period studying abroad in Japan. The final year concentrates on advanced proficiency through spoken and written Japanese and translation from Japanese to English.
