About this course
MA (Hons) in Linguistics, a degree in the Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) and English Language and Linguistics subject area, examines the structure, evolution, and social use of language. The curriculum explores how meaning is created through sounds, words, signs, sentences, and conversations across different societies and historical periods. The first year covers foundational concepts through Linguistics and English Language 1A and Linguistics and English Language 1B. The second year progresses to linguistic theory and the structure of English, alongside the speech sounds of the world's languages and empirical methods. The third year offers advanced study in options such as First Language Acquisition, Origins and Evolution of Language, Speech Production and Perception, and Sociolinguistics. Students also examine Pragmatics, Phonological Theory, and Language Variation and Change.
