About this course
MPhys in Mathematical Physics, a physics degree focused on the mathematical and computational methods used to formulate physical theory. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, and Laboratory Techniques. The programme includes an extended research project in the final year and involves study across both the School of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Mathematics. The first year covers foundational mathematics through Introduction to Mathematics at University, Introduction to Mathematical Analysis, and Linear Algebra 1. The second year introduces dynamics, Fourier analysis, vector calculus, and probability alongside programming, data analysis, and optional experimental techniques. The third year advances into core subjects such as quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism and relativity. The fourth year offers advanced study in areas including condensed matter physics, nuclear and particle physics, general relativity, and statistical physics, alongside independent research.
