About this course

MA (Hons) in Portuguese and English Language, a joint honours degree centred on English Language and Linguistics and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. The programme includes a full academic year spent abroad studying or working in destinations such as Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon and Coimbra. The first year covers introductory foundations through Linguistics and English Language 1A, Linguistics and English Language 1B, alongside a range of outside subjects. The second year explores specialised themes via structure and history of world languages, variation in English over time and across geographical space, and Dynamics of Language and Power. The third year is spent abroad in Portuguese-speaking destinations either studying, working, or combining both approaches across one or two institutions. The fourth year focuses on advanced linguistic and cultural proficiency through modules including presenting and discussing cultural, political and societal topics in Portuguese and advanced comprehension, summary writing, translation and composition.
